There's a whiff of fame here and it carries on to the palate, the drying finish continuing the impression that this is unlikely to make old bones. Plums, cedar, lots of peppery spice, and then that dark, bloody, gamey character.

A redolent Shiraz wine with an abundance of soft tannins that's drinking beautifully. The major component is from the estate's McLaren Flat vineyards. The second instalment is sourced from good sites at Blewitt Springs and Seaview, with a smaller portion of early ripening, low yield fruit originating from a vineyard in the Sellicks sub region which is very close to the sea. They all combine beautifully to form a wine which offers rich aromas of spicy mulberry conserve followed by a smooth mix of black and red berry fruits on the middle and back palate.

Kangarilla is a main road in McLaren Vale which leads to a small village of the same name. The vineyards, located at the northern part of the foothills, ripen later than other parts resulting in cooler climate, aromatically spiced, dark berry driven wines with intense palate presence and soft velvety tannins. Kangarilla is vinified in a mix of traditional open fermenters, followed by an extended term in the pick of French and American oak barrels. Beautifully integrated fruit and smooth tannins, lingering finish of liquorice, chocolates and dark espresso coffee.

Long standing members of the elite Grange Growers Club, Kalleske are one of Barossa's leading Shiraz growers, providing fruit from the most memorable vintages to Penfold for decades. JMK is a luscious fortified Shiraz, from fruit grown to select rows of the Kalleske vineyard, including the renowned Greenock block, vinified and vintaged on the family farm. JMK Port is dedicated to fifth generation grower, John Malcolm Kalleske, who has tended the Kalleske family vineyards for more than fifty years and continues to husband the very vines which are earmarked for JMK. A commemorative Vintage Port to honour the dedication showed by John and all those who came before him, toward their treasured old vines.

A tribute to Johann Georg, the first Kalleske to migrate to Australia. Johann Georg was born in Brätz, Prussia in 1794 and emigrated aboard the Prince George to South Australia with his wife and children in 1838. The Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes in the Barossa ever since. Kalleske Georg is a genuine, 100% Certified by Australian Organic, estate grown and vinified wine, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske wineworks at Greenock, a single vineyard Shiraz produced from the oldest vineyard on the farm.

Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine, sourced off an elite, low yielding block, managed by the sixth and seventh generations of the Kalleske family. The original Greenock plantings were sourced as cuttings off an ancient estate parcel established in the late 1800s. A deluxe edition of Barossa Shiraz, built around a solid backbone of fruit, for a powerful wine of remarkable intensity, perfumed dark roses and licorice, cocoa and tobacco leaf, all lingering on a length of ripe and juicy, super fine tannins.

The Kalleske family have been growing grapes and making Barossa Valley wine since 1853. One of the more distinguished members of the prestigious Grange Growers Club, the Kalleskes have also become one of Barossa Valley's most compelling and contemplative new labels. Greenock Shiraz is 100% biodynamic, as accredited by Australian Certified Organic, sourced from a single low yielding block, established to ancient cuttings, along the western edge of Greenock Creek in the northwest Barossa Valley.

There are three unique, dry grown, low yielding blocks on the Kalleske property which were planted between 1905 and 1960, they yield an intense, powerfully full bodied wine. Fruit is open fermented and pressed into an extravagant selection of French and American oak hogsheads for two years maturation, unfiltered and unfined. Inky black flavours over harmonized tannins, subtle oak complexity in support of sturdy structure and stupendous length. Eduard is laden with layers of juicy winegum richness, beguilingly dark, so highly articulate of old vine Barossa Shiraz opulence.

Stonehorse is an assemblage of several different sites, some planted as far back as 1961, all are closely managed to yield harvests of the most characterful Barossa Shiraz. Choice parcels are vinified to a style which emphasizes the old world, bucolic virtue of the grapes, as enhanced and complimented by an extended term of barrel age. The oak is designed to support and add structure without compromising early approachability of the wine, a forward drinking Kaesler, to be enjoyed in its youth.

The Kaesler family arrived in South Australia as Silesian pioneers, migrating to Barossa Valley in the 1840s. Some of the original gnarled, dry grown Shiraz vines still remain and provide the backbone for the intense wines produced from the sandy loam soils of the estate's prime viticultural block. Old Vine Shiraz is an assembly of four parcels of old Shiraz vines grown to Kaesler vineyards. A Shiraz that will never be overtly fruity, it is best suited to those who prefer a solid, chewy wine with a savoury style and good solid structure.

A single vineyard Shiraz from fruit grown to the estate's 1893 block, hand pruned and hand picked, yielding less than two tonne per acre. When Kaesler first purchased the property, it was in a derelict state and certain to die if measures to revive the site were not expedited. Many years of over cropping and neglect had taken its toll. A previous regime of irrigation with increasingly salty bore water was slowly poisoning the soil. A thousand kilos of Old Bastard's fruit gives about 680 litres of wine or about 900 bottles, single vineyard expression at its most extreme.

Juniper of Wilyabrup are one of the oldest vineyards at the heart of Margaret River. The propitious site was surveyed and defined after a subdivision by one of the nation's most prolific artist families, Ben, Andrew and Robert Juniper. They now produce some of the region's most stately Shiraz wines, Crossing are an entry level, fashioned to a fully approachable easy drinking style, whilst displaying all the sophistication of the estate's opulent icon efforts. The Crossings sound structure and solid weight of fruit make the ideal accompaniement to rich, braised meat recipes.

Tucked away off the beaten track along Godings Road, a rustic barn offers fantastic vistas of the rolling Moorooduc countryside. The misty mornings and generous afternoon sunlight create a mesoclime which encourages the vines to yield small bunches of intensely flavoured Shiraz. The best bunches are identified, gently picked and gingerly sorted, destemmed and open fermented, hand plunged and filled to a mix of French oak barriques for malolactic and ten months élevage, bottled unfined for optimal sauvage appeal.

The uncompromising pursuit of excellence at every step of viticulture and vinification is the key to success for John and Margarete Glaetzer's precious, limited release wines. John and Margarete's vision come to fruition in 1977 when scant amounts of John's Blend inaugural 1974 vintage was released to auspicious critical acclaim. In 1995 the rich and intense Margarete Shiraz was added to the range, providing the opportunity for red wine connoiseurs throughout the world to experience the august efforts of one of Australia's legendary winemakers.

Sourced from old vineyards in Krondorf, Light Pass and Ebenezer, a component of Eden Valley Shiraz has been included to maintain the elegance and purity of style. John Duval's objective with Entity is to construct a wine that's completely true to the grand old vineyards of the Barossa. Subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe dark fruits. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and depth of fruit to insure profound potential for development.

John Duval is one of the world's best known winemakers, heir to a distinguished family tradition of Shiraz growing which spans four generations. As a child he grew up amongst the vines and handled fruit that was earmarked for the great Penfold flagships, he worked alonside Max Schubert and spent sixteen years as Penfolds chief. Eligo is crafted to be a transcendent expression of Shiraz. A wine of restrained power, rich in texture and palate length, Eligo represents the best of vintage, sourced from excellent old vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys.

From those wonderful folks who bring us Morambro Creek. The sole objective with Jip Jip Rocks is to produce the best wine possible from a unique site. Planted on own rootstock and located in the Padthaway Valley which is endowed with rich Terra rosa soils, the Morambro Creek property enjoys excellent sun exposure to achieve grapes of optimal flavours, colour and tannin. Vintages can be dry with little or no rain during fruit set and growing season. Berries are quite small and yields are minimal, flavours are concentrated and the quality superb.

Watervale makes world class Shiraz, distinct for its blueberry mintiness, ingratiating for its plum and cassis richness, immensely satisfying for the delicacy and poise of refined tannins. Jim Barry had an affinity for the land and was blessed with an astonishing talent for selection of terroir. A pure wine from the eminent estate vineyard at Watervale, defined by by a prominence of luscious red fruits, seasoned by a fresh twist of Clare Valley spice, the judiciousness of timely French oak and tasteful measure of mouth filling savouryness.

Jim Barry purchased seventy acres of prime river flats in 1964, from Duncan McRae Wood in the Armagh area of Clare Valley and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of variety and location. The site would go on to become the foundation of Jim Barry's red wine production and to yield a spectacular quality of Shiraz which is earmarked for the internationally renowned The Armagh. McCrae Wood is a big, full bodied wine with extravagant palate in true Jim Barry styling, layered with deep tannins and ripe, concentration of flavours.

When Jim Barry first purchased the Lodge Hill property, his intention was to devote the entire area to white grapes. While Jim was conducting a soil analysis, he recognised his good fortune, discovering a very different profile on a small north facing slope. Warmer than the rest of the property, Jim decided it was the perfect place for premium Shiraz vines. His foresight lead to great triumph just before his passing, when Lodge Hill was awarded Best International Shiraz at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London.

Outstanding Langtons Classification. Armagh is amongst the most venerated locations in Ireland. St Patrick built his stone church there on a site where a cathedral still stands. Irish pioneers, settling Valley Clare in 1849, were so inspired by the beauty of the land that they named the rolling hills after their home at County Armagh. Jim Barry planted his 3â…“ hectare property in 1968, with Shiraz clones originally sourced from Israel, it is one of the nation's great vineyards, still managed to the standards and techniques defined by Jim Barry over forty years ago.

Occam's Razor is a marque established by Emily Laughton, daughter of Jasper Hill winemakers Ron and Elva. A teacher by training, a traveller by choice and a winemaker by preference and practice, Emily has crafted this very special Shiraz wine from fruit supplied by independent growers Andrew and Melissa Conforti, from the neighbouring town of Mia Mia, within the Heathcote wine region. Occam's Razor is produced in small, highly prized quantities based on the same bio-dynamic principles as Jasper Hill's flagship editions of conspicuous red wines.

Georgias Paddock is a powerful single vineyard Shiraz laden with exotic flavours, gentle spice, engaging complexity and heart stirring tannins. An artisanal, single vineyard effort of 250 cases production by small batch winemaker Gary Mills, ex of Margaret River's Amberley Estate and California's Ridge Vineyard. Mills will pick five or six sites per vintage and retain the best for his Jamsheed single vineyard series. Yarra Valley Syrahs are a favourite of Mills for their superb perfume and large chalky, ageable tannins. Jacobs Creek Shiraz has won significant recognition on both sides of the Atlantic, claiming Gold at the highly prestigious London International Wine Challenge. The heritage dates back to 1847 when Johann Gramp planted his first vineyard on the banks of Jacobs Creek. This consistently satisfying red wine exhibits generous flavours of Shiraz pepper, plum and spic fruit characters, subtley enhanced by aromatic notes of toasty vanilla oak.

When Johann Gramp planted his vines along the banks of Jacob's Creek in 1847, he was less preoccupied with the making of history but more concerned with the selection of rootstock and fruit, his choice was Shiraz. Jacobs Creek still retain access to some of the oldest vines in Australia and can call on harvests of the finest Barossa Shiraz every year.
